idea for the documentary

my plan for the documentary posters project is to do a crime based one, as they are the fastest growing documentary topic right now. I don't want to do anything too Gorey or based on real events that happened (Ted Bundy, girl in the picture, Jeffrey Dahmer) , So I have decided to do a different crime that would still get made into  a documentary, stalking.

Numerical data and audience figures

The numerical data and audience figures for documentaries convey that viewership has experienced a significant rise in recent years, driven by streaming platforms with 70% of Netflix users watching documentary content and the demand for documentaries growing by 142% between 2018 and 2021, becoming one of the most fast- growing genres on streaming. In 2024, the average subscriber watched over 4 hours of documentary content per month on major streaming services. The Documentary audiences tend to skew slightly older (30+) and female. However, younger audiences (16-24) are the most likely to be emotionally affected or inspired to action by documentaries, despite being less likely to watch them in cinemas. The top documentary genres are true crimes, historical and cultural.

history of documentaries

The history of documentaries began pre 1900s where they were called “actuality films” as they captured short snippets of real actual events such as pulling a boat into the docks or workers leaving a factory. The first original documentary was filmed by Robert Flaherty in 1922 about the lives of a real Eskimo family. The first mention of the term documentary was used in 1926 to describe a non-fiction film. Then in the 30s and 40s documentaries were a powerful propaganda tool for Nazi Germany, America and Britain during WWII. From the 60s to 90s television became an important outlet for documentary filmmaking, putting more emphasis on journalistic and educational programs. Documentaries today are experiencing a boost in popularity with the help of blockbusters such as Fahrenheit 911, Supersize Me and An Inconvenient Truth.

analysis on the popularity of documentaries

Documentaries have grown in popularity as many people have become interested in real world issues, whether it is crime related or nature centred people feel the need to know more about these subjects. Documentaries show people authenticity in a time where a large part of media is fiction and won’t be covered globally. They range from personal accounts to captivating dramas. In 2023 there was a surge in all documentary genres as two major Hollywood labour unions went on strike, leading to a slowdown in the production of new tv shows. The demand for documentaries rose by 44% from 2021 to 2023.Documentaries are easy to access through streaming platforms such as Netflix and YouTube, and they show niche content that caters to specific interests and attracts dedicated audiences. A disturbing part of why people love documentaries is the true crime genre as people are starting to become more obsessed with it more than ever in today’s society. In a statistic done in 2010 conveys that “w...

The target audience for this documentary are teenagers as they are the same age as the group when the crime happened as well as teens who have seen Sofia Coppola’s re telling of the crime through her 2013 film , adults who remember hearing about the scandal that went on from 2008 and 2009 as it was a massive pop culture moment and True crime fans and this was a very serious case. The documentary is about the ‘bling ring’ (also known as Hollywood Hills Burglar Bunch, The Burglar Bunch, and the Hollywood Hills Burglars) who are a group of teenagers named by the media who robbed the homes of several high-profile celebrities over a period between October 2008 through August 2009. Their activities resulted in the theft of about $3 million in cash and belongings. Much of the stolen property belonged to socialite Paris Hilton, whose house was broken into several times, though over fifty homes were reportedly targeted.
